Open Heart Kitchen’s Heart of California Party fundraiser was held on Friday, September 13th. Just shy of 300 community members joined us for a night of food, live music, and fundraising, set under the beautiful harvest moon. Thanks to the generosity of our guests and supporters OHK grossed just under $100,000, which will go directly back into the community we serve.

One of the most special moments of the evening was when OHK had the opportunity to honor our volunteers with our Golden Apron Award. The Individual Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Katherine Smith, a dedicated volunteer who has been volunteering with us for more than 10 years. Katherine also helps coordinate a group of volunteers from her church, providing OHK with dozens of hours of manpower monthly. Katherine was nominated for the award by Site Supervisors Gary and Evelyn, pictured here with Katherine:

In addition to Katherine’s award, OHK also recognized Kaiser Permanente with our Group Volunteer of the Year Award. Kaiser employees have volunteered 250+ hours of time across 6 of our sites, benefiting all 3 of our meal programs.  In addition to that, Kaiser Permanente recently awarded Open Heart Kitchen a very generous $40,000 grant in support of our Children’s Weekend Bag Lunch Program, ensuring that more children get access to the nutritious food they need to lead a healthy life. Kaiser’s community involvement uniquely pairs grant funding with 65 years of clinical expertise, medical research, and volunteerism to support prevention-focused, evidence-based programs that are expanding access to care and creating healthy environments. We are incredibly humbled by the support we received, and are excited to use the funds to cook up more nutritious meals. Save the date! Our next fundraiser will be held on Friday, September 11th, 2020 at the Palm Event Center in Pleasanton- see you there!
